In the fall, the carriage roads take on a completely different character. The greens of summer give way to reds, oranges, yellows and golds, and every turn seems to frame another section of the road, another bridge, or another view through the trees
What stands out to me is how well Rockefeller’s vision still works more than a century later. The granite bridges, stone walls and winding carriage roads were designed to complement the landscape rather than compete with it. In the fall, that philosophy becomes even more apparent, as the architecture seems to disappear into the surrounding woods and feel like it has always been part of Acadia.
